Reise + Camping
North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest holiday fair puts you in the right mood for the best time of the year! Camping, cruise or package tour – there is something for every taste!
In addition to tourist destinations, REISE + CAMPING offers a comprehensive range of vehicles and accessories for mobile travel: from caravans, campers and mobile homes to tents, folding caravans and mobile homes to camping furniture and practical outdoor equipment.
The Germans are keen to travel, as shown by current industry figures and the response to NRW’s largest holiday fair, Reise + Camping at Messe Essen. From February 26 to March 1, over 60,000 visitors got tips and suggestions for their next trip. Due to the corona virus, which first appeared in parallel in NRW, the number of visitors remained significantly below that of the previous year. “It was a successful fair under the difficult conditions. The industry is doing well, and of course this also benefits Reise + Camping. At the same time, as soon as we became aware of the first Corona cases in North Rhine-Westphalia, we felt the effects on ticket sales, ”says Oliver P. Kuhrt, Managing Director of Messe Essen.
Around 1,000 exhibitors and destinations from more than 20 nations informed the holiday-loving public at Reise + Camping and on the Essen bike tour that started one day later. The range of exhibitors clearly met demand: 82 percent of visitors bought or ordered at the holiday fair or did not rule out this. Highlights included a cruise show booth from the Holland America Line shipping company, which exhibited a cabin for the first time at a trade fair in Germany. “In the 4.5 by 6 meter Signature Suite, newcomers to cruises in particular were able to get a first impression of life on board. In addition, they were able to get inspiration from the numerous lectures on stage, ”says cruise expert Christian Baumann.
The motorhome industry is booming. According to the German Camping Club, the recreational vehicle industry achieved new record sales in 2019 with a turnover of 11.7 billion euros. Reise + Camping presented everything related to the trendy topic of camping in halls 1, 2, 3 and 6. Whether tent, caravan, motorhome, mobile home, folding caravan or practical equipment such as awnings, furniture or solar showers – there was something suitable for every taste and for every wallet. Around 41 percent of the visitors were particularly interested in vehicles, closely followed by camping accessories and international camping tourism. Those who liked it a little more luxurious got their money’s worth in the “Glamping” area. Unusual lodges, pods and even a shepherd’s car awaited visitors there.
The special show “Vehicle foiling” in Hall 7 was completely new this year. Under the motto “Turn old into new – turn new into innovative”, motorhomes and caravans were re-foiled on a large activity area in 20-minute intervals.
NRW’s largest holiday fair also provided real travel experiences. In the holiday cinema in Hall 8 there were lectures such as “Namibia – limitless expanses”, “New Zealand’s natural paradise” and “Where to next? Traveled around the world alone for 1 year ”very popular.
Scandinavian fans were in good hands in the 1,500 square meter Scandinavian World, also in Hall 8. In cooperation with the Nordis publishing house, tour operators, ferry companies, campsites and destinations from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland presented themselves. Jörn Backhaus, Managing Director at Nordis-Verlag: “Despite the difficult external conditions, we can draw a positive conclusion for the Scandinavian world. The informative and varied stage program, but also the lighthouse and the moose attracted a large and curious audience. “
The trade fair was also a complete success for the German Camping Club (DCC): “In 2020, Reise + Camping was again an excellent starting point for those who wanted to find out everything they need to know about mobile leisure. At the DCC booths in Hall 7 and Hall 3, we were delighted to have intensive and constructive discussions with campers, DCC members and our new members. We were also able to offer the DCC Europe award winners a successful platform for introducing themselves to the knowledgeable trade fair audience. We are looking forward to 2021, ”said DCC President Andreas Jörn.
Already on the day before the fair, the DCC and the city of Essen honored Gerhard Reisch, owner of “Holiday Clean”, with the German Camping Prize. The Friday of the fair was dominated by outstanding campsites all over Europe with the DCC European Award Ceremony. The race was won by Kur-Camping Max I from Germany, Marina di Venezia Cavallino Treporti (VE) from Italy, Brunner am See from Austria and Lo Monte Pilar de la Horadada / Alicante from Spain. The platinum award went to top camping in Plön from Germany and Campofelice Camping Village Tenero from Switzerland. For the first time, a DCC Europe Prize for parking spaces was awarded to the Urbachtal Neukirchen motorhome park in Germany.
On February 27th, Fahrrad Essen started parallel to Reise + Camping. Over 250 exhibitors from 12 countries presented bicycles, accessories and cycling tourism in two halls. The main focus was on e-bikes. Campers in particular appreciate the two-wheeled vehicle on vacation to explore the area sportily and to be mobile. Accordingly, around three quarters of the visitors to Reise + Camping also visited Fahrrad Essen. According to a visitor survey, 98 percent are already planning a stay at Fahrrad Essen from February 25 to 28, 2021.
