Health and social care for an aging population is drawing increasing attention around the globe. This article discusses social work’s contribution to elder care. It briefly sets the context for gerontological social work by reviewing the changing global demographic profile, introduces social and economic policy considerations that directly impact on how care is delivered, and characteristic health and social care needs of older people. Social work’s key roles in assessment of need, care management, and therapeutic interventions are then reviewed to draw attention to the profession’s contribution to intervening in and facilitating caring environments for older people with complex and changing needs. Finally, gerontological social work’s capacity to address the needs of an aging population is considered and recommendations for further development made. This article draws on practice examples from various countries, but a thorough cross-national analysis is beyond its reach.
More exhibitors, more space, more special shows – the ALTENPFLEGE 2019 ended successfully on Thursday, April 4, at the exhibition center in Nuremberg . The leading trade fair was the meeting point of the international care industry for three days and attracted a total of 28,000 visitors to the event. Around 700 exhibitors showed innovations, products and services from the areas of care & therapy, job & education, IT & management, catering & housekeeping as well as space & technology. After the trade fair organized by the specialist publisher Vincentz Network took place in Hanover last year, it returned to southern Germany on a regular basis in 2019.
In keeping with the motto of this year’s fair, “ Elderly care in motion“Was the redesigned area” Focus fleet “. The special presentation was the point of contact for the topics of fleet software, route planning, vehicles, service and financing concepts as well as mobility concepts and infrastructure. The centerpiece of “Fokus Fuhrpark” was the large test track, on which electric vehicles of all kinds could be tried out.
The absolute trend topic this year was digitization in elderly care, which ran through all areas of care – from care documentation to supporting technology such as digital assistance systems. Among other things, humanoid nursing robots were shown, which will play an increasingly important role in elderly care in the future.
Mainly digital developments were also the focus of ” AVENEO – space for innovations “. Here 60 young companies, founders and students presented their developments in the fields of technology, the Internet of Things, architecture as well as care and social economy to visitors. AVENEO was also the venue for the start-up challenge , in which the best ideas were evaluated by a top-class jury of experts.
The accompanying congress ALTENPFLEGE Zukunftstag was one of the main pillars of the fair. Under the motto “Strong together!” The event excited with a multifaceted program that brought together the leading minds in geriatric care. Over 80 speakers provided information on current topics and developments in nursing in around 75 lectures and workshops. The fair and congress were opened by Bavaria’s Minister of State for Health and Care Melanie Huml (CSU) and the care representative of the Federal Government Andreas Westerfellhaus .
The “ Focus Universal Rooms“, Which dealt with the trend topic of service living. The visitors had the opportunity to find out about non-stigmatizing technical possibilities for a self-determined life in old age in a fully furnished, barrier-free apartment.
Also new at ALTENPFLEGE: the special presentation #MeetUp: Dein Leben. Your job. It was aimed at young nurses, trainees, schoolchildren and students. The aim was to show young people career opportunities and to inform them about the diverse training and further training opportunities in nursing. Accompanied by a colorful entertainment program, including the care rappers DENA and IDREF, #MeetUp belonged to: Your life. Your job. to this year’s highlights for young nurses.

The satisfaction of the exhibitors was also reflected in the visitors of the leading fair.
According to a survey by the Dortmund-based opinion research institute Gelszus, 86.9 percent of them said they would continue to visit ALTENPFLEGE in the future, 90.8 percent said they were very satisfied with their visit.
The exhibition center in Hanover will be the meeting point of the care industry from March 24th to 26th, 2020. Around 600 exhibitors present the latest developments, trends, services and products for the inpatient and outpatient care industry. After the ALTENPFLEGE 2019 took place in Nuremberg, it will return to Lower Saxony in 2020. It is evident in all areas of nursing that digitization is picking up speed and has an ever increasing impact on daily work. The new “ Nursing Experiment Room ”, for example, gives a glimpse into the future of work in nursing , in which various innovations can be tried out and which will make visitors interested in the opportunities of digitization.
