The market research company, Ecovia Intelligence, estimates that the global market for organic food surpassed 100 billion US dollars for the first time in 2018 (almost 97 billion euros). The United States is the leading market with 40.6 billion euros, followed by Germany (10.9 billion euros) and France (9.1 billion euros). In 2018, many major markets continued to show double-digit growth rates, and the French organic market grew by more than 15 percent. Danish and Swiss consumers spent the most on organic food (312 Euros per capita in 2018). Denmark had the highest organic market share with 11.5 percent of its total food market.

A total of 71.5 million hectares were organically managed at the end of 2018, representing a growth of 2.9 percent or 2 million hectares compared to 2017. Australia has the largest organic agricultural area (35.7 million hectares), followed by Argentina (3.6 million hectares), and China (3.1 million hectares). Due to the large area of organic farmland in Australia, half of the global organic agricultural land is in Oceania (36.0 million hectares). Europe has the second largest area (15.6 million hectares), followed by Latin America (8 million hectares). The organic area increased in all continents compared to 2017.

From February 12 to 15, 2020, the BIOFACH – World’s Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food – takes place at the Exhibition Centre in Nuremberg, Germany. It is the place where people share their passionate interest in organic food; get to know each other and exchange views, and this since 1990.

The combined trade fair of BIOFACH, the World’s Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food, and VIVANESS, the International Trade Fair for Natural and Organic Personal Care, will be more international and diverse than ever before when it opens its doors at Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 12 – 15 February. Both shows are setting new records for exhibitor numbers, display area and international focus. A total of 3,792 exhibitors – 292 of them at VIVANESS – from 110 countries will showcase their products to the trade public on a display area measuring 57,609 m2 . BIOFACH and VIVANESS 2020 are offering their roughly expected 50,000 visitors even more diversity than ever, in two additional halls. The approaches that the organic system already offers for resolving urgent issues affecting the future will be discussed by the organic sector as part of the congress theme “Organic delivers!”, while water will be the focus of the special show “All about water – is the basis of life endangered?”. The key trends at BIOFACH this year are “Packaging”, “Vegan 2.0”, “Open Pollinated Varieties” and “Region 2.0”, while VIVANESS is highlighting “Zero Waste bathroom”, “All about hemp”, “Dental Care” and “Packaging”. In 2020, BIOFACH and VIVANESS will be opened by Dr Jane Goodall, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

The World´s Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food, combined with VIVANESS, International Trade Fair for Natural and Organic Personal Care, is an important business event, an emotional event for the sector, and both a get-together and an opportunity for positioning. This has not been available on the market in this form before now. BIOFACH takes place for the 32th year in succession in 2021 and can look back on an outstanding success story. The exhibition was founded by Hagen Sunder, Hubert Rottner and Jürgen Ries and it all began with 197 exhibitors in the Ludwigshafen Stadthalle in 1990. Some 2,500 visitors attended the “1st European Trade Fair for Organic Food and Natural Products” at that time. The exhibition was organized in Nuremberg for the first time in 1999 and brought together as many as 1,276 exhibitors and more than 15,384 visitors. 2001 the founders decided to put the organization of BIOFACH into the hands of NürnbergMesse. Since then BIOFACH has developed into the World´s Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food and is firmly established.

The natural cosmetics segment was separated from the exhibition in 2007 and since then has been organized parallel to BIOFACH as VIVANESS, International Trade Fair for Natural and Organic Personal Care.

The exhibition covers the fields of organic food, organic drinks and organic non-food products. On four exhibition days, exhibitors and visitors will be able to discuss the latest developments within the organic industry.
