61+1 events, more than 1.2 million square meters of gross floor space occupied, annual revenue of 104.3 million euros, two leading trade fairs with record numbers of exhibitors, several awards and a historic political party conference – the year 2018 at Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH was varied, turbulent and successful. In addition to eleven of our own trade fairs, we hosted 31 guest events and 19 events on the exhibition grounds that had to be relocated due to the temporary closure of the CCH – Congress Center Hamburg. Plus there was our In-Water Boat Show in Neustadt/Holstein. At the same time we were once again able to exceed our own revenue target. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all our exhibitors, visitors and business partners for their loyalty and our close working relationship.
Once again, our own events laid the foundation for another very good result: including the related services, they generated around three quarters of revenue. In particular they comprised the three leading fairs, the INTERNORGA with 1,300 exhibitors, WindEnergy Hamburg, which increased the number of exhibitors compared with the first event in 2014 by almost 20 percent to 1,482, and the SMM – the leading international maritime trade fair – where the number of exhibitors has risen by almost 1,000 since the year 2000 to 2,289. For the two latter trade fairs these were record exhibitor numbers. SMM is also the only fair in Hamburg to take place in 13 halls, since two high-grade temporary structures supplemented the existing eleven exhibition halls.
In total, we welcomed 745,769 participants and visitors to the events on our exhibition grounds in the past fiscal year. A total of 722,649 attended trade fairs and guest events, with another 23,120 visitors reported for the 19 CCH events that took place on the exhibition grounds. And the previous year’s outstanding results were beaten again with a gross floor area used of 1,221,888 square meters.
The Global Wind Summit attracted great attention in 2018: it was the first time that the WindEurope global conference took place at the same time as the WindEnergy Hamburg. For four days that made the Hanseatic city the center of the global wind power industry and a meeting place for all the industry experts. International exhibitors at the WindEnergy Hamburg accounted for more than 50 percent for the first time.
NORTEC, our highly specialized trade fair for production, celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018 with a focus on manufacturing 4.0. The fair always works closely with businesses, universities and policymakers to highlight the latest challenges and present solutions, and this year particularly showcased 3D printing and digital production.
In addition to our own trade fairs, our Guest Events Department organized 31 exhibitions, cultural and sporting events and festivals, contributing once again to the very good result for 2018. Particular highlights were the hella hamburg halbmarathon, which took place for the first time at Hamburg Messe und Congress in 2018, and the POST EXPO, the leading global trade fair for the mail, parcel and express delivery sector. However, the greatest attention came from the 31st conference of the CDU party, for which more than 1,000 international journalists arrived in town – partly because Chancellor Angela Merkel had announced beforehand that she would be resigning as head of the party after more than 18 years.
Our International Department accompanied a total of 347 German exhibitors to fairs in ten countries in 2018. We were active on every continent in the world, with the exception of Australia. Customers were advised by us at the SIAL Food and Gastronomy Fair in Paris, the Seatrade Cruise Global fair for the cruise and tourist industry in Miami, and the Offshore Technology Conference Houston (OTC), which caters to the oil and gas industry.
At the same time the German pavilion was prepared for the EXPO 2019 in Beijing. But three new events that we kicked off in the reporting year will be a particular focus in 2019: the MARINE INTERIORS Cruise & Ferry Global Expo, powered by SMM, in September 2019, the therapie Hamburg in October, a trade fair and congress for physiotherapists, masseurs and medical swimming instructors, and the Hamburg Open – a mixture of a trade fair and a get-together for the German broadcasting and media technology sector – which opens on the exhibition grounds in January 2020.
Experience new trends and developments, experience innovative products from well-known exhibitors, get ideas and inspiration for your own business – all of this is offered by horse owners and breeders in the large exhibition area “Posture and Transport” at HansePferd Hamburg. In addition, in the nationwide unique special show “Modern Horse Husbandry” and in the “Horse Competence Forum” there is concentrated information from experts, insider knowledge and competent advice on all aspects of modern horse operation, from stable planning and hygiene to work equipment and pasture technology to automation. “The focus is always on the species-appropriate husbandry and the well-being of the horses. It’s also about efficient barn management. Today customers of horse farms expect a lot of space and good lighting conditions for their four-legged friends, ” explains the publicly appointed and sworn expert for horse keeping, breeding and sport Dr. Christiane Müller, curator of the special show and forum. Overall, over 450 exhibitors from home and abroad will present their products and services at the Hamburg exhibition center at the most important trade fair for equestrian sports in the north from April 24 to 26.
Large variety of topics in the special show “Modern horse husbandry”
The special show “Modern horse husbandry” offers the highest level of professional competence and product innovations, the heart of which is an active stable in action. Horse companies such as horse owners, athletes, keepers and breeders experience the latest trends, innovations and developments in horse husbandry and can experience many of the exhibits live. Dr. Christiane Müller invites visitors to guided tours of the special show on all three days of the fair. From the point of view of the experts, who are also animal welfare officers of the German Equestrian Federation (FN) as well as members of the FN test committee for horse keeping and the DLG test commission for testing the utility value of stable equipment, the special show topics are also interesting for hobby riders: “The HansePferd is the only trade fair in Germany,
Horse Competence Forum with a new theme day “Focus on Horse Operation”
Exciting lectures by renowned experts await visitors in the Horse Competence Forum. The first day of the fair is all about the horse companies. With a comprehensive program, the new format “Focus on Horse Farming” is aimed specifically at farm managers and anyone interested in keeping horses. For example, the magazine Pferdebetrieb and Rampelmann & Spliethof will present a riding care facility for professionals. Together with the Hippolini Institute, the association “Horses for our Children eV” invites managers, managers from children’s institutions and anyone interested to exchange knowledge on the subject of children’s riding school operations. Experts give lectures and invite you to a lively exchange. The results of a survey of horse farms are presented an hour before the regular opening of the HansePferd from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Interested parties must register with the Hamburg Messe in advance. “We visited several horse farms in the north and created strengths and weaknesses analyzes, which we present anonymously at HansePferd,” explains Dr. Christiane Müller.
Insider knowledge and expert advice at the Horse Competence Forum
The Horse Competence Forum will be open to all visitors from 11 a.m. Industry professionals and independent experts are dedicated to the latest developments in horse husbandry. This is how Thorsten Hinrichs, managing director of HIT, talks about the planning and management of a movement stable. Ulrike Struck from the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture informs about what expectations authorities have when monitoring a horse farm and the veterinarian Dr. Enrica Zumnorde-Mertens from the FN talks about health management in horse farms. Other topics include the use of computer-controlled systems for business organization and protection against wolves with wolf-repellent electric fences.
Exclusive and the first thing at HansePferd: the presentation of the new guidelines
The new “Guidelines on the Handling and Use of Horses from an Animal Welfare Point of View” will also be presented at the Horse Competence Forum. This makes the HansePferd Hamburg the first trade fair in Germany to provide information on the current general conditions. They are presented by Dr. Christiane Müller, who participated in the elaboration. The guidelines will be revised every 15 years by an expert panel based on new scientific studies and published by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture later this year. At HansePferd Hamburg, visitors get an overview of the changes and updates in advance.
Wide range of horse trailers
In the field of horse trailers and transporters, HansePferd Hamburg offers a large selection of leading manufacturers and brands with the latest models and equipment. The trailer specialist Humbaur, for example, promises more security when transporting horses with its new patented panic release. The support rods in the front and rear area of the horse trailer can be released with just one hand. Operation is intuitive. This means that a quick response is possible, especially in an emergency. The transport safety system can not only be opened easily from the outside. Just press the locking mechanism inside the horse trailer and the support bar will slide down. Particularly practical: the lock can be easily closed by gently pressing it in.
Horse trailers with an innovative lighting concept
Under the name “Neo”, Böckmann presents a new generation of horse trailers. Made entirely of polyester, the vehicle impresses with an exclusive, modern design, a large amount of space with a walk-in saddle room and an innovative lighting concept. An arc provides a lot of natural light without the horses being blinded by the traffic. The LED interior light offers white or blue light, whereby the blue light has a calming effect on the horse during transport. The trailer is available in two different sizes.
Mats for the active stable
The exhibitor HIT Aktivstall is focusing on the ground attachment at the HansePferd and is thus targeting private horse owners. The company is introducing the ‘Top Clean’ active stable mats as a novelty. This is a 114×81 cm large and 4.5 cm thick PVC mat with a weight of 27 kg, which can be supplied with or without holes and can also be installed without a substructure in many floor conditions. “The mat forms the basis for good, slush-free open stable housing. If necessary, the posture can be further optimized with time-controlled scuffles and the creation of trails that ensure that the horses move more, ”explains Deputy Managing Director Mark Lemm.
Soils tested by the DLG
The rubber factory Kraiburg Elastik in Hamburg presents rubber floors, which minimize the leakage of health-endangering ingredients such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons thanks to an innovative manufacturing process. The company has the process checked by the German Agricultural Society (DLG) every year. The entire manufacturing process of the floors, from the incoming goods inspection through the processing process to the final product ready for sale, is scrutinized. At the HansePferd, an DLG engineer will present the complex test procedure.
The potential of digital technology
The digital age has long since reached horse keeping. Acclaro Rossmayer is presenting a new software that can be used to create contracts, monitor inventories, organize appointments, calculate prices and bill services. The Schauer Agrotronic company invites visitors to the HansePferd to take a virtual walk through various movement and pit stables of the Austrian exhibitor.
Advisory services for managers
The Futterkamp teaching and testing center of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture is represented for the first time with its own stand at the Hansepferd Hamburg. Here, managers can get advice from experts on key issues of horse husbandry. The spectrum ranges from management to business aspects and technical questions to the construction of riding facilities and the modernization of companies.

Overall, Hamburg Messe und Congress is organizing ten of its own events in 2019: eight on the exhibition grounds in Hamburg, the HAMBURG ancora YACHTFESTIVAL on the site of ancora Marina in Neustadt/Holstein, and South Asia’s biggest maritime exhibition and conference, the INMEX SMM India in Mumbai. Then there are more than 20 CCH events, again including four annual general meetings and numerous medical congresses. One highlight is the Rotary International Convention in June, which will host more than 26,000 Rotarians from all over the world.
Abroad, the HMC is organizing around 20 German joint participations on behalf of various federal ministries and on its own initiative in 2019. They include events in South Korea, Indonesia and Kenya. More than 30 guest events will also contribute to the planned revenue of 68.2 million euros, including many new guests like Spielemesse Hamburg.
